Info For The Challengers!
What have I let myself in for?
You are going to give a brief presentation at Hotarucon 3; with the aim of it being informative, entertaining and as close to three minutes (ideally, not over) in length as you can get. It can be about anything you want, as long as it’s relative to the interests of a Hotarucon attendee. Oh! Wouldn’t you know: you’re a Hotarucon attendee! Thus whatever you want to give a talk about is good.
What do I need to produce in advance?
You will need to make a set of slides to go along with your presentation, that is compatible with MS PowerPoint, and send it to me a week before the event. Don’t panic if you aren’t a PowerPoint wizard; focus on it complimenting your talk and being a guide for you and the audience. The minimum requirements for the presentation (which are all so things work smoothly) are:
A title card, so we can introduce you and your topic.
At least one page of actual content, so we know you have started your presentation
An end card, so we know you have finished.
Previous challengers have found making three content slides really works, as that gives you three one-minute beats of information to give to the audience. You can put anything you want on those slides, especially if it highlights and complements what you are talking about: key words, and pictures work great, but you do you. Handouts, poems, songs, getting the audience to do exercise, coding demonstrations, shout-and-response, and even having everyone make a paper airplane have been done at these. The only restrictions are
no more than 90 seconds of music or video in total, as any more than that detracts from the “person giving a live presentation” thing
nothing that could directly help you time your talk, as that is a bit cheaty for the timed challenge part
If you have any questions or points we should take into account then get in touch as soon as possible. The above is about helping you give your talk and the audience enjoying it. The Spirit Of The Challenge Is More Important Than The Words.
What do I do on the day?
● Turn up about 10 minutes before the panel, so I can run you through everything below.
● Have no watch or other timekeeping device readily to hand, so you can’t be accused of being cheaty
● Go “OOOOOH!!” and look excited every time I mention THE CUPCAKES OF GLORY!!!, so I look slightly less of a prat when I say it
● Have fun and knock ‘em dead!

What have I let myself in for?
You are going to give a presentation on a pop culture topic, of your choice, at Minami 2022, with the aim of making it fun, informative, and as close to three minutes in length as you can get.
What do I need to produce in advance?
You will need to make a presentation document to go along with your presentation, that is compatible with MS PowerPoint, and send it to raggedyman@gmail.com two weeks before the event. Don’t panic if you aren’t a PowerPoint wizard; focus on it complimenting your talk and being a guide for you and the audience.
Please Do
· Put in a title card at the start, so we can introduce you and get you ready to begin
· Have at least three slides with content in them, as it gives you three one minute “beats” to work with
· Include things that highlight and compliment your talk, rather than repeat what you are saying, that makes for a more interesting talk and stops you reading the slide (which may sound a good plan but always trips people up)
· Have an “any questions?” slide at the end, so you know when your done and we can get right into the audience asking you questions
The only “don’t” is that we ask for no more than 90 seconds of music or video into it in total. Any more than that detracts from the “person giving a live presentation” thing and can be a bit cheaty on the “closest to 3 minutes” bit.
If you have any dietary requirements or preferences then please let me know, as everyone involved has a chance to win THE CUPCAKES OF GLORY!!! That they can enjoy. Anything winnable will be referred to as a cupcake, even if it very obviously isn’t.
If you have any questions then ask, ask, and ask again.

How does the panel work?
I’ll be MCing and explaining things to the audience, so if you forget anything below, there is no need to panic about remembering any of this. The running order is random and announced on the day, unless you want a specific place in the running order.
After explaining the event you will each be called up to centre stage, in the order of the voting slip, and I will give your name/an intro and the title of your talk. You will be given a mic and your presentation will be ready to go on my laptop (you just need to hit space every time you want it to go forward). When you are ready, hit the space bar and your talk begins!!
Once you begin the timekeeper hits start on their watch and will stop the timer once you signal that you are done. If your talk reaches 4 minutes, they will say “four minutes” and hold up four fingers. Don’t panic if you still have things to say, just close things up and focus on the major bits. Should you get to five minutes they will call “Time”, please wrap up at that point.
You will then get a round of applause, because you’ve earned it!
Next you will face three questions from the audience. You get to pick who asks you them, and there is no time limit on this.
Finally, sit down and enjoy the other talks
How do the CUPCAKES OF GLORY!!! work?
Once all the presentations have been given then I will give a quick recap on who gave a talk on what, and on what the voting categories are. Everyone at the panel, including you. gets to vote on three categories:
● Most Presenterly (1st 2nd and 3rd choice, giving 3, 2, and 1 points respectively)
● Most Infomazing(1st 2nd and 3rd, giving 3, 2, and 1 point respectively)
● Special Mention Award (name of the nominee and reason for the mention, picked by the host)
Closest To, And Hopefully Not Over, Three Minutes is purely based on the times of peoples talks
Once we have collected and calculated/selected the winners, the awards begin. 3rd, 2nd, and 1st places get read out and each gets a round of applause. The 1st Place winners are then asked to choose a CUPCAKE OF GLORY!!! from the Cupcake Mountain. Please note that everything on Cupcake Mountain is by definition a CUPCAKE OF GLORY!!! and shall be referred to as such, even if to the untrained eye they might look like cookies, fruit, or anything else. If there is something specific you want to be a CUPCAKE OF GLORY!!! then please let us know.
Then that’s it, all done. Oh, and you will feel marvellous as well as probably have people coming up and asking you more questions about your topic.

Powerpoint Karaoke
An intensely silly improvisational challenge for intrepid orators, improvisers, and outright blaggers that works like this.
You come up to the stage, pick one of the two nominal topics, are shown the first slide, and then hit go.
You start talking, and every 20 seconds a new slide is presented
If you can go the full three minutes without talking gibberish, taking an excessive pause, and whilst incorporating each slide, you win a CUPCAKE OF GLORY!!!
